The story of Hoover Dam

ARC Identifier 37058 / Local Identifier 115.31. Explains the overwhelming need to control and regulate the raging waters of the Colorado River; the 1928 passage of the Boulder Canyon Project authorizing construction of the Hoover Dam; the ensuing construction of diversion tunnels and then the dam itself; building of support facilities, such as a steel fabrication plant for giant pipe construction; and creation of hydroelectric operations that provided electricity to California, Nevada, and Arizona. Also details how Lake Mead evolved into a successful recreational area as a result of the dam construction. Department of the Interior. Bureau of Reclamation. (06/20/1923 - 11/06/1979)

  1. If you cut out all the swearing in this dam video, it would only be 6 minutes long.

  2. The dams were always a tragedy for the colorado river. The river no longer reaches the sea and the land is slowly being poisoned - were once annual flooding washed away minerals and heavy metals into the delta (which is now dead).
Mesquite is creeping everywhere and consume milllions of gallons of water each day - again flooding once kept the river banks clear.
Dams hold back water and heavy metals are increasing in the water tables of lake mead and all others. A river flows for a reason.

  14. That's our socialist government at work folks! Always trying to take away our freedom and liberty with their social programs! Nothing good ever comes from these kinds of backward socialist initiatives! Good thing we killed those Vietnamese with their socialist ideas! Sprayed 'em with our Agent Orange, we did! Wouldn't want them to self determine into socialists. Didn't know what was good for 'em but we did! They come to take our guns they gonna have to come through me!

  18. I agree totally - I really used to be proud of my country and even a few of its leaders back when they acted halfway patriotic, but now - im becoming ashamed of our leaders, love my country but sorely dissappointed in our turncoat politicians.

  20. You said it - this was back when we were still proud & growing and the government was investing in our infrastructure. Now all govt. does is lie cheat and steal for themselves. I feel proud of my country when I see these old films, but now i dont feel so proud, our own govt has sold us out to the chinese and the muslims. Its all a become a big money laundering scam - where did that last 5 trillion go ??!! Why do we not drill our own resources and remain subservient to the arabs?? :<(

  21. LOL the flooding of the CO was made those valleys fertile in the first place. No they and the deserts irrigated by the CO probably need fertilizers that are created from natural gas & petroleum Man may not be so clever after all. Not to say it all isn't a construction, engineering feat But U know that sucker has several ICBMs programmed to travel there at a push of a button.
