Hoover Keymatic A3008 Washing Machine (1976)

Hoover A3008 Keymatic Auto Washer UK 1976, produced by hoover UK at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. It used a revolutionary Keyplate to read the washing programmes instead of a conventional timer. You simply selected the square keyplate, identifying the wash programme you required and then inserted the Keyplate into a slot or Card reader in the front of the machine. Then the reader read the individual slots and aligned them with the cams inside to determine the correct programme. It was marketed as the machine that could wash any new clothing in the future as technically all you would have to do is buy a new keplate!!!

It spins at 800rpm, but very steady in action, you`d have thought then that we now spin at 1600rpm!!!

Hoover UK started producing washing machines in 1948, the first one being a simple single tub!!! and the rest is history, the first twintub appeared in 1957, and the first automatic washing machine in 1961....

  13. I'm a bit puzzled-when mine was tumbling ,before the light switched on to spin, it would give a 5 sec spin just before it went to spin.I notice your one dosen't. From memory, the other 3 or 4 keymatics i knew of did the same as mine on the spin dry programme

  17. I notice that when the machine is balancing before the spin,it goes straight into spin mode. From memory, i remember my one would attempt a spin before the spin light came on and then carry on as normal.

  19. Fantastic - I love this. When I lived at home (I'm 37 years old now) my mums neighbour always had a twin tub. When I asked her why she only had a twin-tub she told me that she had a keymatic for a week and it gave her an electric shock than made her fly across the kitchen - so she went back to her twin tubs... I used to love going to her house on a Sunday and watching her do the washing with the twin tub. My mum owned the Hoover Matchbox Auto Washer A3040 and the matching tumble dryer.
